Recognizing early signs of autism is crucial, as early intervention can significantly improve outcomes for children. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the early signs of autism, emphasizing the importance of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nayi-disha.org\/article\/what-early-intervention-and-who-can-help-you-it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> early detection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and support.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASD is characterized by challenges in social communication and interaction, along with restricted and repetitive behaviors. It&#8217;s important to note that autism is a spectrum, meaning it manifests differently in each individual. While the exact causes of autism are not fully understood, research suggests a combination of genetic and environmental factors contribute to its development.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Prevalence of Autism<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2025, the estimated prevalence of autism in the U.S. is 1 in 31 children (3.2%). In India, the estimated prevalence is around 1 in 68 children, or 1.12 per 100 children aged 2-9 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Early signs of Autism in children<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every child develops in their own way. Some children may show developmental differences that are part of being autistic. These signs are not problems to be \u201cfixed\u201d but differences to understand and support. Being able to spot them early can help families access helpful tools, therapies, and environments that work better for their child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children with autism often show differences in three main areas:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Language and communication<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children with autism may communicate in different ways. Their way of expressing themselves may not always follow typical timelines or styles but that doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re not trying to connect.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Delayed speech development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Some children may start using words or phrases later than other children. For instance, by 18 months, they may use very few or no spoken words.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nonverbal communication differences<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: They might use fewer gestures like pointing, waving, or nodding. Some children may communicate more through actions, expressions, or body movements than through words.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Echolalia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Some autistic children repeat phrases they\u2019ve heard in songs, videos, or from adults. This is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nayi-disha.org\/article\/what-is-echolalia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">echolalia <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and can be a way for them to process language or communicate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Differences in eye contact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Some children may not seek or hold eye contact in the way that is typically expected. This doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re not listening or engaged, it may just not be a comfortable or meaningful form of connection for them.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<b style=\"color: initial; font-family: inherit;\"><\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b style=\"color: initial; font-family: inherit;\">2. Social interaction<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social interaction can look different for children with autism. It\u2019s not about a lack of interest, it\u2019s about expressing connection in a way that might not be easily understood by others.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Preferring solo play<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Some children may enjoy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nayi-disha.org\/article\/play-important-tool-your-childs-overall-development\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">playing <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alone or show less interest in joining group activities. This doesn\u2019t always mean they don\u2019t like people, it could be about needing space or feeling unsure about how to join in.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Connecting in different ways<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: They may not respond to their name consistently or may avoid shared <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nayi-disha.org\/article\/tips-to-improve-attention-tolerance-in-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attention <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(like following a parent\u2019s finger when pointing at an object). This doesn\u2019t mean they aren\u2019t paying attention, they might just be engaging differently.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reading social cues differently<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Understanding facial expressions, voice tones, or social rules can sometimes be tricky. They may not always respond in expected ways but that doesn\u2019t mean they don\u2019t care.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Emotional expression may vary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Some children may not show feelings in ways others recognize easily. They may need more support in identifying, expressing, or responding to emotions.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<b style=\"color: initial; font-family: inherit;\"><\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b style=\"color: initial; font-family: inherit;\">3. Sensory regulation, movement, and interests<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many children with autism experience the world through intense sensory and movement-based experiences. What looks \u201crepetitive\u201d or \u201codd\u201d to others may be a way to self-regulate, find comfort, or express joy.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stimming (self-stimulatory behavior)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Children might engage in movements like hand-flapping, rocking, spinning, or jumping. These are often called &#8220;stims&#8221; and can help them feel calm, focused, or excited.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Strong preferences for routine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Changes in routines or plans may feel overwhelming. Predictability often brings comfort, and transitions might require extra preparation or support.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Deep interests<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Children with autism may become very focused on specific topics or objects, sometimes for long periods. These passionate interests are often a source of joy, learning, and comfort.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sensory processing differences<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Children may be very sensitive to sounds, textures, lights, smells, or touch or they may seek out certain sensory input. For example, they might cover their ears in noisy spaces or love feeling certain fabrics. These responses aren\u2019t &#8220;overreactions&#8221;, they\u2019re valid ways their brain experiences the world.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<b style=\"color: revert; font-size: revert; font-family: inherit;\"><\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b style=\"color: revert; font-size: revert; font-family: inherit;\">Importance of early support and intervention<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nayi-disha.org\/article\/what-early-intervention-and-who-can-help-you-it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u0938\u092e\u092f \u0938\u0947 \u092a\u0939\u0932\u0947 \u0939\u0938\u094d\u0924\u0915\u094d\u0937\u0947\u092a<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can significantly enhance a child&#8217;s development.
